The chain needs to be kept in good condition because its health affects the performance of other components.
If the chain is loose, worn, or dirty, it puts significant strain on parts like cogs, chainrings, and derailleurs, leading to accelerated wear and tear.
If the chain breaks or malfunctions, you’re stranded with no other option than walking your bike back.
To be sure your ride is as smooth as possible, it’s important to have the chain at the correct tightness.
Having it too loose can result in it coming off the sprockets, and too tight will make pedaling much harder.
To ensure accuracy, you should pull the chain no more than one-half inch away from a straightedge. It’s a straightforward process – all you need to do is loosen the axle nuts of the rear wheel, then move it forward or backward until the wheel is centered in the frame and your desired tension is achieved. Once that’s done, simply tighten the axle nuts, and off you go!
What can go wrong with your bike chain?
Have you been noticing that your bike ride isn’t feeling quite right lately?
There could be an issue with the chain.
If you have to exaggerate the movement of your shifter to switch gears or if you feel that your pedaling is not as smooth anymore, these are telltale signs that something might be wrong.
Moreover, if the pedal jerks forward when you’re applying pressure and the chain makes a lot of noise while you pedal but not while coasting, these are also indications that you should take a closer look at your chain.
When in doubt, it’s always best to take your bike to the local bike shop and get checked out by an expert!

Steps to tighten your bike chain

How to tight chain of single gear bike
1- Place your bike in the correct stance for an easy process. Place it upside down.
2- In order to get a better view of the bike chain, use a bike stand or any flat surface and take it off the ground; all you have to do is flip it so that the saddle and handlebars are facing down. This way, you can take a closer look at the chain.
3- Use a reliable socket wrench in order to release the nuts and rear axle of your bike. You just have to turn the nuts in a counterclockwise direction until they are slightly loosened. Be careful not to over loose them so that you can get the chain to perfect tightness for your wheel according to your preferences.
4- After slightly loosening the nuts, you can now drag the rear tire with more ease. Perform this step with more care, as it helps align the chain and evenly distribute its tension. It is important to do this in a controlled manner to make sure that you won’t damage your bike due to aggressive pulling.
5- In order to be sure about correct chain tension, you can use a short tip. The tip is when you spin the bike wheel, the chain should move about half an inch only. If it moves less than half an inch, then it might be too tight or else too loose.
6- Now put the tire in its original position and ensure that it is centered in the wishbone, and line up the holes in accordance with its previous alignment. Once done, tighten the nuts on both sides with a wrench socket. Double-check to confirm that both sides have been properly secured.
7- Now, take your bike out for a test ride to make sure that everything is in working in order. When you take your bike out for a spin, make sure to check if the rear tire is properly secured and not touching either the frame or the chain. This will ensure that your bike chain functions well at higher speeds without the risk of developing any problems or even damaging the components.
How to tighten a bike chain with a derailleur screw
1- Place your bike in the correct stance for an easy process. Place it upside down.
2- Find the rear derailleur screw. You can find it easily as there is the alphabet “B” on its surface.
3- Once you have tracked the derailleur screw, turn the screw clockwise, it will increase the chain tension.
4- You can stop here and test if your chain is in the correct stance.
5- If not, then you have to proceed with adjusting the rear wheel. First, disconnect the brakes from the cables. Then slide the rear axle to the way of rear dropouts. Sliding the rear axle in the direction of the rear dropouts is a simple way to increase the tension on the bike chain. However, it’s important to make small adjustments, so you don’t tighten it up too much. After you adjust the axle, lower the brake lever and check the tension. If it doesn’t quite feel tight enough, lift it back up and slide in the axle a little bit more until it’s just right.
Tips to prolong the life of your chain
- The primary priority of bike maintenance is ensuring your chain is oiled, clean, and runs smoothly.
- Depending on the environment you’re riding in, it might require more maintenance; extra caution should be taken when cycling in wet or dusty conditions, as this can add extra strain to the chain.
- On bicycles equipped with coaster breaks, it’s even more important to make sure that the proper tension is applied to ensure a smooth ride every time.
- Always double-check that your chain guard is properly installed, and do not touch the crank of the chain – a loose guard might lead to issues with your bike down the line.
- Lubricate your bike chain timely. I would recommend doing this twice a week.
